Oceania Insignia Fire December 11, 2014

Oceania Cruise Line Caribbean Island Saint Lucia

December 11, 2014 around 0830 hours, Oceania Insignia had a fire break out in the engine room while Oceania Insignia was in the port of St. Lucia with approximately 650 passengers aboard. Three people were killed, two contractors and one crew member, with a four person medically evacuate after suffering smoke inhalation .

According to a spokesman with Oceania Cruises, three crew members members and two contractors were working in the area when the fire broke out and were transferred to a medical facility. Three of them did not survive their injuries.

All Oceania Insignia passengers were safely evacuated. The passengers disembarked while arrangement were being made to fly the cruise passengers back to Miami, Florida

Oceania Insignia, acquired by Norwegian Cruise Line earlier this year, underwent a $50 million refurbishment this year.

An Oceania press release said, "All guests will receive a 100 percent refund and a 50 percent credit towards a future Oceania Cruises voyage."

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating, but Marshall Islands officials will be the lead investigators.

Oceania Insignia departed San Juan, Puerto Rico December 7 and was scheduled to arrive in Miami on December 17.
