Ocean Star Pacific Fire Huatulco, Mexico April 16, 2011

Ocean Star Cruises - Ocean Star Pacific in Huatulco, Mexico

A generator caught fire on Saturday, April 16, 2011 aboard Ocean Star Cruise Line's Ocean Star Pacific while the Mexican flagged cruise ship was about six miles off the coast of Huatulco, Mexico.

At the time of the blaze an estimated 522 passengers and 226 crew were aboard the disabled ship, with all passengers safely evacuated. Ocean Star Pacific was a drift after the blaze, while on the second cruise after a month-long refit in Caracas Bay on the island of Curacao, Netherlands Antilles.

Ocean Star was sailing very light on this voyage, apparently cruising out of Mexico has not quite caught on. While the ship has 520 cabins, including 334 exterior and 186 interior cabins, capable of accommodating 1050 passengers, only 522 passengers have been reported to be aboard.

Reports prior to the first cruise indicated the ship was nearly sold out for the spring and summer cruising season. At the current 50% capacity rate, this cruise line was already bleeding money, before the fire.

Ocean Star Pacific is the former Nordic Prince built in Helsinki, Finland, ordered by Admiral Cruises. She was finished after Admiral Cruise Lines was taken over by Royal Caribbean Cruises Lines. Launched on July, 1970, in 1995 she was owned by Sun Cruises as MV Carousel. Sun sold her to Louis Cruise Lines with a new name painted on her hull, MV Aquamarine. In December 2010, Louis sold her to Ocean Star Cruises. She had just entered service with Ocean Star on April 10.

Ocean Star Pacific is sailing three to seven-night itineraries from Manzanillo and Acapulco, Mexico with calls at Cabo San Lucas, Acapulco, Manzanillo, Ixtapa, Huatulco and Port Vallarta.
