2 Dead On Hurtigruten MS Nordlys in Alesund, Norway Cruise Ship Fire

An engine room explosion on Thursday, September 15, 2011 around 0920 hours aboard the Hurtigruen MS Nordlys while the cruise ship was sailing north off the coast of Ålesund, Norway resulted in the death of two crew members, nine crew members injured, with no reported injuries to passengers.

The explosion caused a power outage which hindered fire fighting efforts.

MS Nordlys was sailing out of Bergen, Norway with 207 passengers from 16 nations and 55 crew members aboard.

The stricken ship was taken to port. The stabilizer fins should have been retracted when the ship docked. However they weren't and instead were pushed into the hull during docking, resulting in the hull being punctured and a 15"x 3" hole allowing water to flood into the cruise ship. As MS Nordlys took on water, she began to list, as much as 21-degrees.

Passengers were evacuated into Ålesund without their belongings while crew members stayed aboard to help with the fire fighting effort.

The ship also had about 20 vehicles aboard which remained aboard during emergency repair efforts.

Passengers were being transported home on Monday, September 19, 2011 with two crew members still in the hospital at that time.

Hurtigruten announced on September 19 that all departures of MS Nordlys were canceled until Mid-October. The winter schedule from 1st November to 31st December 2011 would not be affected by the accident
