Hydrofoil Ferry Fire Passengers Jump Overboard Vina Express Joint Ventures

Vina Express Joint Stock Company's hydrofoil ferry Vina Express 1 vessel caught fire becoming a total loss with 85 passengers aboard as it was taking passengers down the Saigon River in Ho Chi Minh City.

The fire quickly consumed the hydrofoil ferry with passengers jumping overboard and awaiting rescue.

The hydrofoil ferry caught fire 15 minutes after departing the Bach Dang Wharf in downtown Ho Chi Minh City as it headed to Vung Tau.

No one was injured in the accident.

A father and his son rescued around 50 of the passengers. Ngo Van Hong and his son, Ngo Huynh Long were given a certificate fo merit award and a cash award of VND20 million (USD952) at a ceremony the day after the fire.

The family was rewarded for leading the rescue of the passengers by immediately steering their nearby boat to the scene where passengers were frantic and jumping overboard as the fire raged.

About a third of the passengers were tourists.
