Pacific Far East Lines SS Mariposa Extortion Plot Cruise Ship Bomb Threat

On July 11, 1973, Pacific Far East Lines cruise ship SS Mariposa was told that the Port Marine Exchange operator received a bomb threat from a man via the telephone, stating there was a bomb aboard the 300-passengers ship in the luggage area, and he was not kidding. The bomb threat was determined to be a hoax, but the ship was delayed in Port Of Los Angeles by two hours.

The SS Mariposa was being managed by Matson Lines at the time and was en route from Los Angeles, California to Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada then onto Alaska.

She was christened by Electo Sevier in 1956 in Oregon and ran the Pacific Ocean until she was lost in bankruptcy.

The SS Mariposa pulled into San Francisco on April 7, 1978 after her last cruise to Hawaii. Pacific Far East Lines could no longer afford to run the company and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Government subsidies of $8,000,000 annual were not renewed due to the age of the ship. The family of Mayor Joseph Alioto could not afford to run the company without subsidies, filing for bankruptcy.

The SS Mariposa was sold to World Airways, Inc., in 1979, went through various ownerships and names until she went to India in 1996 for breaking-up.
