Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines - Grandeur Of The Seas Fire
A raging three-hour fire gave passengers a scare in the early morning hours of Monday, May 27, 2013 aboard Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines' Grandeur Of The Seas as the cruise ship was sailing towards CocoCay in the Bahamas.
Grandeur Of The Seas embarked from Baltimore, Maryland on Friday, May 24, 2013, the first day of the Memorial Day week holiday with 2,224 passengers and 796 crew members aboard.
The blaze was reported as starting on a aft mooring deck at around 0100 hours on Memorial Day, with crew members knocking on passenger doors as the cruise ship's public address system bellowed out the fire announcement.
The ship maintained power and was able to sail into Freeport in the Bahamas where passengers were blown back to Baltimore, Maryland.
Passengers were compensated with unlimited Internet and phone service followed by the offer of a full refund, plus a credit for a free cruise. When passengers arrived back at Baltimore Washington International, a jazz band was playing live music in the baggage claim area of the airport.
Grandeur Of The Seas' cruises are set to resume on July 12, 2013 after repairs are made to the ship.
The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the fire.
