Princess Cruises Grand Princess Fire Near Antipaxos Island Greece

On Monday, July 16, 2012, Crown Princess had a fire aboard in the Ionian sea, east of Antipaxos Island, between Corfu and Piraeus, Greece.

The small fire was automatically extinguished by the fire fighting system and none of the 3325 passengers aboard were injured.

There was only minor damage to the cruise ship. After Crown Princess was inspected by Katakolo port authorities, the ship continued on the voyage.

The fire was caused by a passenger in their cabin due to wrong usage of electrical tools in the cabin.

Months later Crown Princess quit sailing the Mediterranean and began cruises from Galveston, Texas.

The same year Crown Princess had two Norovirus outbreaks January 28, 2012 and February 4, 2012.

Another Princess Cruises ship fire which was due to a careless passenger was the fire aboard Star Princess on March 23, 2006. Star Princess was en route to Jamaica from the Bahamas with 3,800 people aboard when a passenger cigarette caused a fire on a balcony and quickly spread to other areas of the ship. One passenger was killed and twelve were injured.

On
July 18, 2006 Crown Princess reported a 24° listing while cruising to New York City. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) found that the second officer disengaged the automatic steering mode of the vessel's integrated navigation system after it put the ship into what the officer felt was an unusually hard turn to port and he took manual control of the steering. He then turned the wheel first to port, then from port to starboard several times, eventually causing the vessel to list more. Dozens were injured as furniture and items were tossed about the cruise ship. The second officer was terminated from Princess Cruises.
