Carnival Tropicale Fire September 19, 1999

Carnival Cruise Lines - Carnival Tropicale Fire

On September 19, 1999 a fire broke out in the engine room of Carnival Cruise Lines' Tropicale causing the ship to lose propulsion and leaving it dead in the water, close to an approaching tropical storm.

The fire took place while Tropicale was approximately 100 miles southwest of Tampa, Florida in the Gulf of Mexico.

The ship was repaired enough by the next day to move to port at a speed of 8 knots.

None of the 1,097 passengers or the 600 crew was hurt in the fire, though

Though there were no reported injuries or deaths, a 40-year-old man with a history of cardiac illness was medevaced to a Tampa, Florida hospital by a United States Coast Guard helicopter.

The fire was contained in the engine room.

Carnival provided full refunds to passengers and offered a free future three- or four-day cruise.

Passengers booked into the September 20 voyage, were offered a full refund and a 50 percent discount on future cruises three to five days in length.

At the next USCG inspection, on October 18, 1999, Tropicale was slammed with inspection violations, a partial list is as follows:

SECOND MATE SCALA DOES NOT HOLD A VALID LICENSE. LICENSE IS EXPIRED. MEMBER MUST BE REMOVED FROM NAVIGATION DETAIL. PRIOR TO DEPARTURE.

FIRE SCREEN DOORS THROUGHTOUT VESSEL NOT OPERATING PROPERLY. PRIOR TO 18 NOV 99 REPAIR DOORS TO ENSURE PROPER CLOSURE.

DESIGNATE PROPERLY TRAINED AND COMPETENT GMDSS OPERATOR AS SOLE DESIGNATED OPERATOR DURING EMERGENCIES AND CHANGE MUSTER LIST AS APPROPRIATE. PRIOR TO DEPARTURE.

REPAIR SECTION FOUR OF THE SANITATION SYSTEM WHICH IS NOT OPERATING PROPERLY. CLOSE OFF EFFECTED CABINS. REPAIR TO SATISFACTION OF FLAG AND PROVIDE A REPORT TO MSO TAMPA. PRIOR TO 18 NOV 99.

REPLACE BRACKET FOR FIRE EXTINGUISHER AT STATION A0561. PRIOR TO 18NOV99.

VESSEL HAS SEVERAL HOUSEKEEPING PROBLEMS, INCLUDING IMPROPER STOWAGE IN STAIRWELLS, CHEMICALS AND CLEANING SUPPLIES IN IMPROPER SPACES. CLEAR ALL SPACES OF DEBRIS AND IMPROPER STOWAGE. PRIOR TO 18 NOV 99.

VESSEL SHORT ONE CERTIFIED OILER. PROVIDE CERTIFICATE PRIOR TO DEPARTURE.

FIRST ASSISTANT ENGINEER VICENTINI DOES NOT HOLD A PROPER LICENSE FOR CURRENT POSITION AND MAY NOT SAIL ABOVE QUALICATION AS SECOND ENGINEER. CORRECT WATCHLIST AND ASSIGNMENTS AS APPROPRIATE PRIOR TO DEPARTURE.
