Five Egyptians were killed and two were injured when a fire broke out on a Nile cruise ship moored near the ancient Egyptian ruins of Luxor late on Sunday, December 2, 2007.

The five Egyptians who died were either trapped by flames as they tried to extinguish the blaze or drowned after falling into the river.

The ship had to evacuate 43 French tourists who were aboard the Aurora when the fire began. All were evacuated to another ship in the area at the time of the fire.

The fire began in the engine room and rapidly spread throughout the rest of the cruise ship causing extensive damage.

The ship had been sailing from Luxor, site of the ancient city of Thebes, to Egypt's southernmost city of Aswan when the blaze broke out.

The all-suites, 233-foot ship, departs on Mondays for Nile River cruises. Aurora is owned by the MG Group. The company is owned by Madam Wafaa and Magdi Radi.
